What is BS EN 60645-6-Audiometric instruments for the measurement of otoacoustic emissions about?

BS EN 60645 is a European standard on electroacoustics that discusses the audiometric equipment to measure otoacoustic emissions that determine cochlear status, specifically hair cell function.

BS EN 60645-6 is the sixth part of the BS EN 60645 series that applies to instruments designed primarily for the measurement of otoacoustic emissions in the human external acoustic meatus evoked by acoustic probe pulses or tones.

BS EN 60645-6 defines the characteristics to be specified by the manufacturer, lays down performance specifications for two types of instruments 1 and specifies the functions to be provided on these types.

BS EN 60645-6 describes methods of test to be used for approval testing and guidance on methods for undertaking routine calibration.

The purpose of BS EN 60645-6 is to ensure that measurements made under comparable test conditions with different instruments complying with the standard will be consistent.

Note: Instruments which provide a measurement function not specifically within the scope of the standard shall still comply with any relevant requirements. BS EN 60645-6 is not intended to restrict development or incorporation of new features, nor to discourage innovative approaches.

Who is BS EN 60645-6-Audiometric instruments for the measurement of otoacoustic emissions for?

BS EN 60645-6 on audiometric instruments for the measurement of otoacoustic emissions is useful for:

  • Audiometric instruments manufacturers
  • Audiometric instruments test personnel
  • Occupational health and safety departments
  • Quality assurance departments

Why should you use BS EN 60645-6-Audiometric instruments for the measurement of otoacoustic emissions

Developments in the field of diagnostic hearing measurement have resulted in several instruments designed to evaluate the otoacoustic emissions of the human ear evoked by acoustic test signals having different spectral and temporal characteristics.

The practical use of such instruments concerns the measurement of sound energy emitted by the inner ear and its separation from sounds emerging from other physiological or artificial sources.

BS EN 60645-6 provides you with guidance on requirements for specific instruments, general specifications, acoustic stimulus system, test quality assuring system, measuring system, presentation of results, demonstration of conformity with specifications, marking, safety requirements, additional characteristics to be specified by the manufacturer, etc. This helps you in the calibration of audiometric instruments.

The requirements and test methods provided by BS EN 60645-6 assist you in improving the performance and quality of audiometric instruments and ensuring the accuracy of measurement of otoacoustic emissions.

With obedience and compliance to BS EN 60645-6, you can enhance audiometric instruments’ efficacy and manufacture a standardized high-quality product.
