What is BS EN 504702 about?

BS EN 50470 discusses electricity metering equipment. BS EN 504702 is part two of the BS EN 50470 multi-series and discusses the requirements of electromechanical meters for active energy. BS EN 504702 applies to newly manufactured electromechanical watt-hour meters intended for residential, commercial, and light industrial use, of class indexes A and B, for the measurement of alternating current electrical active energy in 50 Hz networks.

BS EN 504702 applies to electromechanical watt-hour meters for indoor and outdoor application, consisting of a measuring element and register(s) enclosed together in a meter case. BS EN 504702 also applies to operation indicator(s) and test output(s).

BS EN 504702 distinguishes between

  • Meters of class indexes A and B
  • Direct connected and transformer operated meters
  • Meters for use in networks equipped with or without earth fault neutralizers

Note: BS EN 504702 does not apply to:

  • Watt-hour meters where the voltage across the connection terminals exceeds 600 V (line-to-voltage for meters for polyphase systems)
  • Portable meters

Who is BS EN 50470 for?

BS EN 504702 on electricity metering equipment is useful for:

  • Electricity metering equipment manufacturers
  • Quality control personnel

Why should you use BS EN 504702?

Electric meters or energy meters measure the total power consumed over a time interval. BS EN 504702 provides general requirements and type test methods. The test levels in BS EN 504702 are regarded as minimum values to guarantee the proper functioning of the electromechanical meter under normal working conditions. Other test levels in BS EN 504702 might be necessary for special applications and should be agreed on between the user and the manufacturer. Using BS EN 504702 you will be able to ensure that the energy meters you manufacture comply with quality requirements.
