What is BS EN 62056-6-1- Electricity metering data exchange about?
BS EN 62056 discusses electricity metering data exchange. BS EN 62056-6-1 is the sixth part of BS EN 62056 multi-series and discusses Object Identification systems (OBIS). BS EN 62056-6-1 specifies the overall structure of the Object Identification System (OBIS) and the mapping of all commonly used data items in metering equipment to their identification codes.
BS EN 62056-6-1 applies to all types of metering equipment, such as fully integrated meters, modular meters, tariff attachments, data concentrators, etc. To cover metering equipment measuring energy types other than electricity, combined metering equipment measuring more than one type of energy or metering equipment with several physical measurement channels, the concepts of medium and channels are introduced.
This allows meter data originating from different sources to be identified. While BS EN 62056-6-1 fully defines the structure of the identification system for other media, the mapping of non-electrical energy-related data items to ID codes is completed separately.
Note: EN 13757-1:2014 defines identifiers for metering equipment other than electricity: heat cost allocators, thermal energy, gas, cold water, and hot water.
Who is BS EN 62056-6-1 - Electricity metering data exchange for?
BS EN 62056-6-1 on electricity metering data exchange is useful for:
- Meter manufacturers
- Software engineers
- Electrical engineers
- Quality control personnel
- Utility providers
Why should you use BS EN 62056-6-1 - Electricity metering data exchange?
The DLMS/COSEM specification for meter data exchange is based on the client/server model, where the head-end system (HES) acts as a client requesting services, and the end devices (e.g., meters) act as servers providing the services requested. In many cases, the client can reach each meter directly, using unicast, multicast, or broadcast messages.
OBIS provides a unique identifier for all data within the metering equipment, including not only measurement values, but also abstract values used for configuration or obtaining information about the behaviour of the metering equipment. The ID codes defined in BS EN 62056-6-1 are used for the identification of logical names of the various instances of the ICs, or objects, data transmitted through communication lines, and data displayed on the metering equipment.
BS EN 62056-6-1 helps you to facilitate the analysis of metering information, with the help of Object Identification systems (OBIS) for the purposes of billing, load, customer, and contract management, it is necessary to uniquely identify data items, whether collected manually or automatically, via local or remote data exchange, in a manufacturer-independent way.
What’s changed since the last update?
BS EN 62056-6-1:2017 supersedes BS EN 62056‑6‑1:2016, which is withdrawn. BS EN 62056-6-1:2017 includes some technical changes with respect to BS EN 62056‑6‑1:2016. These include:
- A country identifier has been added for Latvia
- Abstract profile objects related to payment metering as well as an LTE monitoring profile have been added
- Current average 4 for harmonics measurement allocated
- Measurement period 4, for harmonics measurement 1. b.0.8.8.VZ has been added
