What is ISO 17409 about?

ISO 17409 specifies electric safety requirements for conductive connection of electrically propelled road vehicles to external electric circuits. External electric circuits include external electric power supplies and external electric loads. ISO 17409 provides requirements for the charging modes 2, 3, 4, as defined in IEC 618511, and reverse power transfer. For mode 4 ISO 17409 provides requirements regarding the connection to an isolated DC EV charging station according to IEC 6185123.

ISO 17409 applies to the on-board sections of vehicle power supply circuits. It applies also to dedicated power supply control functions used for the connection of the vehicle to an external electric circuit.

Note-

ISO 17409 does not provide comprehensive safety information for manufacturing, maintenance and repair personnel.

Who is ISO 17409 for?

ISO 17409 on electrically propelled road vehicles is useful for:

  • Electric vehicle manufacturers
  • Battery manufacturers and installers
  • Vehicle power supply circuits manufacturers
  • Electricity charging station grid manufacturers and installers
  • Electric vehicle designers
  • Automotive engineers

Why should you use ISO 17409?

Electric vehicles are powered by batteries which are needed to be charged regularly. While charging an EV large amount of energy is flowing through the system. It is necessary that the charging procedure is safe and secure. ISO 17409 specifies electric safety requirements for conductive connection of electrically propelled road vehicles to external electric circuits.

ISO 17409 provides specific requirements for the vehicle inlet, plug, and cable to help the manufacturers ensure completely safety.

When charging, an EV battery can get hot. ISO 17409 gives guidelines for protection against thermal incidents.

ISO 17409 provides guidance on tests to make it easy for the manufacturers to verify that the electrically propelled vehicle stops the DC power transfer if the DC power contact temperature limit is exceeded.

ISO 17409 lays out instructions for owner’s manual and marking which will help you and the user in identifying functions and hazards and facilitate ease of use of the EV.

ISO 17409 provides test that can be used to determine the total y-capacitance of the on-board section of the vehicle power supply circuit, as well as for parts (sub-system or component) of the on-board section of the vehicle power supply circuit.

What’s changed since the last update?

BS EN ISO 17409:2020 supersedes BS EN ISO 17409:2017, which is withdrawn.
