What is BS EN 50395- Electrical test methods for low voltage energy cables about?

BS EN 50395 is a European standard that discusses low voltage energy cables. It contains the electrical test methods that are used for harmonized low voltage energy cables.

BS EN 50395 contains electrical test methods required for the testing of harmonized low voltage energy cables, especially those rated at up to and including 450/750 V.

The particular cable standard dictates the tests which need to be performed on the relevant cable type. It also specifies whether the specific test is a type test (T), a sample test (S) or a routine test (R) for the particular cable type.

The origin of the test methods and the background to the standard is also included in BS EN 50395.

Note: A description of the origin of these test methods and the background to this European Standard is given in the Introduction and in Annex B

Who is BS EN 50395- Electrical test methods for low voltage energy cables for?

BS EN 50395 on electrical test methods is relevant to:

  • Low voltage energy cable manufacturers
  • Electrical equipment manufacturers
  • Electrical engineers
  • Telecommunications industry
  • Internet service providers
  • Quality control and testing authorities

Why should you use BS EN 50395- Electrical test methods for low voltage energy cables

Low-voltage cable refers to electrical wires and trimmings used in applications that require less infrastructure.

BS EN 50395 provides best industry guidance on the Insulation resistance test, voltage test on cores in water, and voltage test on completed cable. If you are a manufacturer, complying with these tests can help determine the dielectric strength, the capability to withstand voltage stresses and if your products offer adequate electrical insulation.

As a result, you can demonstrate the safety, reliability and performance of low voltage energy cables and determine whether or not they are fit for purpose.
