What is BS IEC 60092-501 Special features of electric propulsion plant about?

BS IEC 60092-501 focuses on electrical installations in ships. BS IEC 60092-501 is the 501 part of the BS IEC 60092 series of standards that specifies requirements for all electric propulsion plants and gives the specifications, system design, installation and testing of at least:

  • Generators and their prime movers
  • Switchboards
  • Transformers/reactors
  • Semiconductor convertors
  • Propulsion motors
  • Excitation systems
  • Control, monitoring and safety systems
  • Wires, cables, busbars, trunking systems
  • Harmonic filters

The aim of BS IEC 60092-501 is to provide requirements for electrical installation on ship which prevents incorrect operation of electric propulsion plant.

Note: Bow and stern thrusters intended as auxiliary steering devices, booster and take-home devices, all auxiliary generating plants, and accumulator battery powered propulsion machinery and equipment are excluded.

Who is BS IEC 60092-501 - Special features of electric propulsion plant for?

BS IEC 60092-501 on electric propulsion plant is useful for:

  • Electric propulsion plant manufacturers
  • Electric propulsion plant installer
  • Product designers
  • Shipbuilders
  • Shipowners
  • Quality control department
  • Safety department

Why should you use BS IEC 60092-501 - Special features of electric propulsion plant?

The purpose of the electric propulsion system is to generate thrust to move a ship across the water. BS IEC 60092-501 provides electrical installations in sea-going ships, incorporating good practice and coordinating, as far as possible, existing rules. BS IEC 60092-501 form a code of practical interpretation and amplification of the requirements of the International Convention on Safety of Life at Sea, a guide for future regulations which may be prepared and a statement of practice for use by shipowners, shipbuilders and appropriate Organizations.

BS IEC 60092-501 covers design requirements and test methods for prime movers, generators, propulsion switchboard, propulsion transformers, converters, propulsion motors, and podded drivers that can be used while manufacturing of the electric propulsion plant. BS IEC 60092-501 can ensure that the propulsion system shall operate efficiently under all weather and manoeuvring conditions in order to prevent incorrect operation and damages.

What’s changed since the last update?

BS IEC 60092-501:2013 supersedes BS IEC 60092-501:2007. BS IEC 60092-501:2013 includes some technical changes with respect to BS IEC 60092-501:2007. These include:

  • Requirements regarding system responsibility, electromagnetic compatibility (EMC),
harmonic distortion and filtering, special requirements for ships with propulsion motor(s)
and podded drives, and power management system (PMS)
  • Overall technical review to update the standard according to general requirements and
    referenced equipment standards
