What is BS EN 62019 — Auxiliary contact units about?
BS EN 62019 is an international standard that covers guidelines for good quality electrical accessories for circuit breakers and similar equipment for domestic safety applications.
BS EN 62019 applies to auxiliary electromechanical contact units associated (or intended to be associated) with circuit-breakers for overcurrent protection, and with residual current operated circuit-breakers with or without integral overcurrent protection for household and similar installations, having a rated voltage not exceeding 440 V AC and 250 V DC, and a rated current not exceeding 10 A.
BS EN 62019 specifies the technicalities such as related definitions, classification, characteristics, marking and other relevant information, standard conditions for operation in service, requirements for construction and operation, general tests for auxiliary contact units.
Note 1: The requirements given in BS EN 62019 may also be used as guidance for auxiliary contacts units intended to be assembled with other switching devices for household and similar installations.
Note 2: It is recommended that the advice of the manufacturer be sought concerning any application with low-level energy appliances (low-level values of current and/or voltage.) For low-energy contacts, specific recommendations are given in IEC 60947-5-4.
Who is BS EN 62019 — Auxiliary contact units for?
BS EN 62019 on Auxiliary contact units is useful for:
- Manufacturers and suppliers of circuit-breakers and auxiliary contact units
- Suppliers and dealers of circuit-breakers and auxiliary contact units
- Designers of circuit-breakers and auxiliary contact units
- Services providers for circuit-breakers and auxiliary contact units
- Regulatory authorities for circuit-breakers and auxiliary contact units
- Electrical engineers
Why should you use BS EN 62019 — Auxiliary contact units?
The auxiliary contact unit is the unit containing one or more control and/or auxiliary contacts mechanically operated by the main switching device such as circuit breakers, relays, switches, etc.
BS EN 62019 serves the objective to state the characteristics of the auxiliary contact units so that the users can verify and set them as references for manufacturing high-quality, efficient, and globally accepted auxiliary contact units. It exemplifies their electrical and mechanical requirements with respect to the various duties to be performed by these auxiliary contacts, under various operating conditions.
BS EN 62019 presents the users with the significance of the rated characteristics and of the markings and the test procedures which helps them to verify the performance of auxiliary contact units.
BS EN 62019 sets the view such that the users are able to satisfy the functional requirements of the auxiliary contact units with respect to environmental conditions, including those of enclosed equipment, dielectric properties, terminals, etc. It also guides the users for the safe use of auxiliary contact units.
