What is BS EN 60811-506 – Impact test for insulations and sheaths about?

BS EN 60811-506 is the 506th part of EN 60811 series. The IEC 60811 series specifies the test methods to be used for testing non-metallic materials of all types of cables. These test methods are intended to be referenced in standards for cable construction and for cable materials.

BS EN 60811-506 gives the procedure for performing impact tests at low temperatures on extruded insulations and sheaths.

Note 1: Non-metallic materials are typically used for insulating, sheathing, bedding, filling or taping within cables.

Note 2: These test methods are accepted as basic and fundamental and have been developed and used over many years principally for the materials in all energy cables. They have also been widely accepted and used for other cables, in particular optical fibre cables, communication and control cables and cables for ships and offshore applications.

Who is BS EN 60811-506 - Impact test for insulations and sheaths for?

BS EN 60811-506 on impact test for insulations and sheaths of cable is relevant to:

  • Optical fibre cables
  • Cable wires manufacturer
  • Electricity transmission suppliers
  • Sheathing components manufacturer
  • Non-metallic material manufacturer
  • Electrical equipment manufacturer
  • Electrical engineers
  • Mechanical engineers

Why should you use BS EN 60811-506- Impact test for insulations and sheaths?

The impact test determines the amount of energy absorbed by a material during fracture. This absorbed energy is a measure of a given material's toughness and acts as a tool to study temperature-dependent brittle-ductile transition. It is to determine whether the material is brittle or ductile in nature.

This cold impact test is intended for sheathed cables of any type, irrespective of the type of insulation of the cores, and for the insulation of wires. BS EN 60811-506 provides a general specification, sampling, and preparation of the test pieces for insulation, apparatus, test conditions, procedure, and expression of results with a test report that ensures the temperature performance of sheathing and insulations materials for cables.

Compliance with BS EN 60811-506 can benefit you by providing accurate and necessary tests to demonstrate their performance of the sheaths. It also helps you manufacture better quality insulations and sheaths.
