BS EN 62056 discusses electricity metering data exchange. BS EN 62056-5-3 is the fifth part of BS EN 62056 multi-series and discusses DLMS/COSEM application layer. BS EN 62056-5-3 specifies the DLMS/COSEM application layer in terms of structure, services, and protocols for DLMS/COSEM clients and servers, and defines rules to specify the DLMS/COSEM communication profiles. 

BS EN 62056-5-3 is in line with DLMS UA 1000-2, the “Green Book” Ed. 8.2:2017. The main new features are the ACCESS service, the new security suites 1 and 2 supporting symmetric key and public-key cryptography, the general protection mechanism, and the XML schema for COSEM APDUs.

The DLMS/COSEM specification for meter data exchange is based on the client/server model, where the head-end system (HES) acts as a client requesting services, and the end devices (e.g., meters) act as servers providing the services requested. In many cases, the client can reach each meter directly, using unicast, multicast, or broadcast messages.  

BS EN 62056-5-3 provides you services for establishing and releasing application associations, and data communication services for accessing the methods and attributes of COSEM interface objects, defined in IEC 62056-6-2 using either logical name (LN) or short name (SN) referencing. 

BS EN 62056-5-3 guides you on how to use the COSEM application layer in various communication profiles. It specifies how various communication profiles can be constructed for exchanging data with metering equipment using the COSEM interface model, and what are the necessary elements to specify in each communication profile.

BS EN 62056-5-3:2017 supersedes BS EN 6205653:2016 which is withdrawn. BS EN 62056-5-3:2017 includes some technical changes with respect to BS EN 6205653:2016. These include: 

  • New references added 
  • General DLMS/COSEM definitions added 
  • Definitions related to cryptographic security added 
  • General abbreviations: new abbreviations added
