What is BS EN 16907-6-Land reclamation earthworks about?

BS EN 16907 is a European standard that discusses earthworks. The main aim of the EN 16907 series is to provide best industry strategies and guidance to entities involved in earthworks, to ensure that the foundational stability and integrity of civil engineering processes are maintained.

BS EN 16907-6 is the sixth part of the multi-series that deals with underwater excavation and hydraulic placement of fill material for land reclamation projects.

Note: BS EN 16907-6 does not cover dredging and/or placement of rock, mine tailings, mineral wastes and contaminated soils.

Who is BS EN 16907-6- Land reclamation earthworks for?

BS EN 16907-6 on land reclamation earthworks using dredged hydraulic fill is relevant to:

  • Geotechnical engineers and consultants
  • Designers, contractors, designers, operators and maintainers of earthwork
  • Construction companies
  • Land/soil/site investigation authorities
  • Land reclamation project management
  • Civil engineers
  • Local authorities

Why should you use BS EN 16907-6- Land reclamation earthworks?

Dredging and land reclamation projects generally have three main stages: Pre-construction (Initiative, Initiation, Earth-structure Design and Procurement), Construction (including the earthworks design of a dredged hydraulic fill project) and Post-construction (Use and End of life).

BS EN 16907-6 covers the execution stage of land reclamation with dredged hydraulic fill and the associated design of the works.

The main purpose of this BS EN 16907-6 is to ensure that functional requirements and specifications for land reclamation projects are in harmony with site boundary conditions and construction methods.

BS EN 16907-6 specifies minimum requirements for site related data to be acquired before the procurement and execution stage of a dredging and land reclamation project.

BS EN 16907-6 gives guidance on how the selection of the dredging equipment shall be undertaken. It also gives guidance on the selection of a borrow area and on the judgement regarding the suitability of the fill material for the project.

BS EN 16907-6 offers the general principles on how to design the actual execution of a dredged hydraulic fill project and offers guidelines for monitoring and quality control of that execution in order to guarantee that the fill mass exhibits the behaviour as intended by the designer of the land reclamation.

As a result, the durability, stability and structural integrity of your earth-structures in land reclamation projects can be maintained.
