ISO 5010 is an International Standard that discusses earth-moving machinery.
ISO 5010 specifies steering system tests and performance criteria for evaluating the steering capability of wheeled, ride-on earth-moving machinery as defined in ISO 6165:2012.
The main objective of ISO 5010 is to minimize the risk of occupational hazards that are relevant to operating wheeled machines.
Note: Functional safety of the steering system is not covered in ISO 5010.

ISO 5010 deals with the following significant hazards, hazardous situations, or hazardous events relevant to wheeled machines, when used as intended and under conditions of misuse which are reasonably foreseeable by the manufacturer:
- Mechanical hazards
- Ergonomic hazards
- Hazards due to maintenance
- Hazards due to the control system
- Hazards related to traveling function
By adopting ISO 5010-compliant tests and performance criteria for evaluating the steering capability of the wheel you can avoid incidents of uncontrolled steering movement during machine operation. You can design a steering control system such that the movement of the steering control element is consistent with its effect. What’s changed since the last update?
BS EN ISO 5010:2019 supersedes ISO 5010:2007 which is withdrawn. BS EN ISO 5010:2019 includes some technical changes with respect to ISO 5010:2007. These include:
- The title has been changed to “Wheeled machines” to include machines with drums and crawler wheel assemblies
- Requirements have been provided for earth-moving machinery (EMM) with a maximum machine speed <20 km/h
