What is ISO 190144 about?  

ISO 190144 is the fourth part in the multi-series of documents that is applicable to earth-moving machinery for functional safety. 

ISO 190144 specifies general principles for software development and signal transmission requirements of safety-related parts of machine-control systems (MCS) in earth-moving machinery (EMM) and its equipment, as defined in ISO 6165. In addition, this document addresses the significant hazards as defined in ISO 12100 related to the software embedded within the machine control system. The significant hazards being addressed are the incorrect machine control system output responses from machine control system inputs.  

Note: ISO 190144 is not applicable to EMM manufactured before the date of its publication.

Why should you use ISO 190144?  

Earthmoving equipment is large machinery, usually heavy-duty vehicles, that is used in construction projects involving earthworks. They're used to transport big volumes of dirt, dig landscaping foundations, and so on. Hydraulic drives are the major source of motion for most earthmoving equipment. 

Electrical/electronic/programmable electronic systems (E/E/PES) are utilised for functional safety in earth-moving machinery, and ISO 19014-4 handles systems containing any combination of electrical, electronic, and programmable electronic components. 

ISO 19014-4 specifies the machinery in question as well as the extent to which risks, hazardous circumstances, or hazardous events are covered. 

ISO 19014-4 gives recommendations for the design of software and the subsequent related testing. This can help you achieve software reliability by means of readable, understandable, testable, and maintainable software. ISO 19014-4 defines functions that enable you to achieve or maintain the safe conditions of your system. The functions relating to the detection, indication, and handling of faults by safety-related portions of control systems, as well as online and offline assessments of the safety functions, are described in ISO 19014-4. 

Thus, compliance with ISO 19014-4 can help you avoid software faults, control hazards that can occur in subsystems and establish adequate independence of software components. 

What’s changed since the last update?  

BS EN ISO 190144:2020 supersedes PD ISO/TS 159982:2012, which is withdrawn. BS EN ISO 190144:2020 includes the following technical changes with respect to PD ISO/TS 159982:2012. These include: 

  • Additional requirements for software development 
  • Requirements for software-based parametrization development 
  • Requirements for transmission of safety-related messages on a communication bus 
  • Requirements for software validation and verification of machine performance levels
