What is BS EN 14128 about?
Chemicals against insects can act according to their specific properties within a fleeting time (fast-acting) or only after a prolonged period (slow-acting or with a deferred effect). Different tests and efficacy requirements are needed for these several types of curative wood preservatives.
BS EN 14128 specifies the minimum performance requirements in biological tests for products for curative uses against specific wood-destroying organisms. BS EN 14128 also specifies the biological tests required together with the efficacy criteria to be achieved in each test.
Note1: BS EN 14128 is applicable to all wood preservative products supplied for application in liquid form for curative uses against attack by wood-boring beetles.
Note2: BS EN 14128 is applicable for products applied to prevent the growth of the dry rot fungus through masonry.
Note3: BS EN 14128 is applicable to products for curative uses supplied for application as pastes, solids, or in capsule form.
Note4: BS EN 14128 is not applicable to products used as fumigants.
Note5: BS EN 14128 is not applicable for determining whether specific curative products, used alone or in combination, are effective in conferring long-term protection against attack by wood destroying organisms. Preventive effectiveness can be determined using BS EN 599-1 but only for products that can be tested using the methods and interpretative procedures defined in BS EN 599-1.
Who is BS EN 14128 for?
BS EN 14128 on efficacy criteria for curative wood preservatives is beneficial for:
- Manufacturers and suppliers of wood
- Quality control
- Manufactures of wood preservatives
Why should you use BS EN 14128?
Wood is used for all sorts of construction purposes. Wood can easily degrade therefore wood preservation measures need to be taken to increase the durability and resistance from insect destruction.
Curative wood preservative products should be used in an integrated way, BS EN 14128 prescribes the strategy involving a series of actions appropriate to the particular circumstances of each case. BS EN 14128 specifies the associated physical measures involving appropriate building works to remedy ingress of moisture and to dry out any dampness can be an essential prerequisite for the use of any curative products. BS EN 14128 helps in determining the effectiveness of the wood preservative on the given insect. This will help to ensure the efficiency of the preservative to preserve the wood.
Overall, BS EN 14128 guides you in selecting and specifying products on the basis of their effectiveness as demonstrated in accordance with the criteria given.
What’s changed since the last update?
BS EN 14128:2020 supersedes BS EN 14128:2003, which is withdrawn.
Compared to EN 14128:2003, the following modifications have been made:
- The limits of the application rates of the fungicide solution have been removed
- The criterion for effective value has been changed to criterion for brv
- Product classification, product description, and product labelling have been merged in Product labelling
- Annex B and C have been merged and changed from normative to informative
