What is BS EN 16228-7 - interchangeable auxiliary equipment safety about?

The construction and mining sectors utilize drilling equipment and procedures to drill into both rock and soil. BS EN 16228-7 is a European Standard that discusses safety requirements for drilling and foundation equipment for the safe and proper operation, maintenance, and service of the drilling and foundation equipment.

BS EN 16228-7 is the seventh part of the ‘Drilling and foundation equipment – Safety’ multi-series that deals with all significant hazards for interchangeable auxiliary equipment when they are used as intended and under the conditions of misuse which are reasonably foreseeable by the manufacturer associated with the whole lifetime of the machine.

The requirements of this part are complementary to the common requirements formulated in EN 16228-1:2014+A1:2021.

Note 1: BS EN 16228-7 does not repeat the requirements of EN 16228-1:2014+A1:2021, but adds or replaces the requirements for application for interchangeable auxiliary equipment.

Note 2: Diaphragm wall cutting tools are dealt with in EN 16228-5:2014+A1:2021.

Who is BS EN 16228-7 - interchangeable auxiliary equipment safety for?

BS EN 16228-7 on interchangeable auxiliary equipment safety is useful for:

  • The construction industry
  • The mining industry
  • Drilling and foundation equipment manufacturers
  • Agricultural equipment manufacturers
  • Entities involved in civil engineering projects
  • Entities involved in commissioning, maintenance, and operation of drilling and foundation equipment
  • Regulatory bodies / Health and safety bodies
  • Engineers
  • Site managers
  • Machine operators and trainers
  • Supervisors

Why should you use BS EN 16228-7 - interchangeable auxiliary equipment safety

The activity of drilling has inherent potential safety hazards which need to be addressed. The BS EN 16228 series intends to mitigate these risks. The machinery concerned and the extent to which hazards are covered are indicated in the scope of BS EN 16228-7.

BS EN 16228-7 contains all hazards, (hazardous situations and events), identified by risk assessments as significant for interchangeable auxiliary equipment and which require action to eliminate or reduce risk.

Interchangeable auxiliary equipment includes pile installation and extraction equipment, impact

hammers, extractors, vibrators, deep vibrators, static pile pushing/pulling devices, rotary percussion hammers, rotary drilling drives, drill mast equipment such as leaders equipped with a drill stem and gears attached to the boom of an excavator, and casing oscillators/rotators.

BS EN 16228-7 provides guidance on:

  • Safety requirements and/or protective measures
  • Additional protective measures for interchangeable auxiliary equipment
  • Verification of the safety requirements and/or protective measures
  • Marking of interchangeable auxiliary equipment

BS EN 16228-7 provides specific requirements on information for use, such as instruction handbooks and marking. BS EN 16228-7 helps you to maximize overall processing productivity and efficiency and/or reduce operating costs.

BS EN 16228-7 guidelines help you during maintenance, as well as transportation to and from the worksite. BS EN 16228-7 enables you to mitigate risks and safely accomplish a wide range of complicated jobs.
