What is BS EN 15632-3 – Requirements of non bonded plastic service pipes about?

BS EN 15632 is a European Standard on district heating pipes. The main aim of the BS EN 15632 series is to provide manufacturers with best industry practices to demonstrate the performance of pre-insulated flexible pipes such that they are fit for its intended use.

BS EN 15632-3 is the third part of the BS EN 15632 series that provides requirements and test methods for flexible, pre-insulated, direct buried district heating pipes with plastic service pipes and no bonding between the layers of the pipes.

BS EN 15632-3 is valid for maximum operating temperatures of 95 °C and maximum operating pressures up to 10 bar for a design lifetime of at least 30 years.

Note: BS EN 15632-3 does not cover surveillance systems.

Who is BS EN 15632-3 - Requirements of non bonded plastic service pipes for?

BS EN 15632-3 on district heating pipes is useful for:

  • Manufacturers of pipelines and its parts for district heat
  • Manufacturers of pre-insulated flexible pipes
  • Anyone involved in the commissioning, design, installation, and operation of district heating pipes
  • Thermal insulation material manufacturers
  • Quality control personnel
  • Engineers
  • Local authorities

Why should you use BS EN 15632-3 - Requirements of non bonded plastic service pipes

Pre-insulated flexible non bonded pipe systems with plastic service pipes are widely used in the district and local heating networks. In this regard, BS EN 15632-3 specifies the basic design criteria for flexible district heating pipes.

BS EN 15632-3 specifies the classification and general requirements for service pipes and fittings and provides the best industry recommendations on product characteristics and includes procedures for testing and marking pre-insulated flexible pipes.

With BS EN 15632-3-compliant testing, you can determine whether your products exhibit adequate performance when it comes water tightness, oxygen tightness and axial shear strength.

For plastic service pipes the lifetime is influenced by the temperature profile. For BS EN 15632-3 a calculatory temperature profile has been used. The lifetime is calculated by applying Miner's Rule, guidance on which is covered in BS EN 15632-3.

Thus, if you are a manufacturer, complying with BS EN 15632-3 can help demonstrate the performance and reliability of non bonded plastic service pipes, making the overall piping system highly efficient and sustainable.
