What is BS EN 174143 about?

BS EN 174143 is the third part of the BS EN 17414 series of documents that specifies requirements and test methods for factory-made thermally insulated nonbonded flexible pipe-in-pipe assemblies for directly buried district cooling distribution systems, comprising a service pipe and a casing of polyethylene. The pipe assembly can also include the following additional elements: measuring wires, spacers, and diffusion barriers.

BS EN 174143 is intended to be used in conjunction with EN 17414-1.

The design is based on an expected service life with continuous operation of a minimum 50 years.

NOTE: BS EN 174143 applies only to insulated pipe assemblies, for continuous operation with water at various temperatures (1 to 30) °C and a maximum operation pressure of 25 bar dependent on the material specified.

NOTE: In conjunction with the other parts of EN 17414, BS EN 174143 is applicable to pipes, fittings, their joints, and to joints with components made of non-plastics materials intended to be used for district cooling installations.

NOTE: BS EN 174143 does not cover surveillance systems.

Who is BS EN 174143 for?

BS EN 174143 on the non-bonded system with plastic service pipes is useful for:

  • Manufacturers of steel or plastic service pipes
  • Manufacturers and suppliers of polyurethane thermal insulation
  • Air- conditioners, fans manufacturing industries

Why should you use BS EN 174143?

District cooling is an emerging urban utility service involving the centralised production of chilled water that is piped to commercial buildings for air-conditioning.

BS EN 174143 provides the classification of pipe systems designed for continuous operating pressures and temperatures and their service life.

BS EN 174143 provides the general requirements on service pipes, fittings, and their connections to check the leakage in the linear direction at the end of each pipe section and the risk of water accumulation in the thermal insulation.

Overall, the test methods let you manufacture the plastic service pipe with the non-bonded system for district cooling pipe and have a check on the quality control of the plastics service pipe fittings in accordance with temperature and pressure. BS EN 17414-3 also lets you build an efficient and the necessary requirements for the waste management system and recycling of materials used for district cooling pipes.
