What is BS EN 17415‑1 about?
BS EN 17415‑1 is the first part of the BS EN 17415 series of documents that specifies requirements, design, and test methods for straight lengths of factory-made thermally insulated pipe-in-pipe assemblies for directly buried district cooling distribution systems, comprising a service pipe from DN 15 to DN 1200, rigid polyurethane foam insulation and a casing of polyethylene. The pipe assembly can also include the following additional elements: measuring wires, spacers, and diffusion barriers.
The design is based on an expected service life with continuous operation of a minimum 50 years.
NOTE: BS EN 17415-1 applies only to insulated pipe assemblies, for continuous operation with water at various temperatures (1 to 30) °C and a maximum operation pressure of 25 bar.
Who is BS EN 17415‑1 for?
BS EN 17415‑1 on district cooling pipes is useful for:
- Manufacturers of fitting assemblies of steel or plastic service pipes
- Manufacturers and suppliers of polyurethane thermal insulation
- Air- conditioners, fans manufacturing industries
Why should you use BS EN 17415‑1?
District cooling is an emerging urban utility service involving the centralised production of chilled water that is piped to commercial buildings for air-conditioning.
BS EN 17415-1 provides the requirements and specifications of technical delivery conditions of the steel service pipe and material properties and composition of the casing of the manufactured pipe.
Raw materials, composition, and manufacturing conditions of polyurethane (PUR) foam thermal insulation from the production of pipe assemblies are given in BS EN 17415-1.
BS EN 17415-1 provides the measurement method for the determination of steady-state thermal conductivity together with the foam density, cell size, compressive strength, and composition of the gas in the cells of the insulation.
BS EN 17415‑1 provides properties of pipe assembly to calculate axial shear strength, temperature, thermal conductivity, impact resistance, and linear water tightness.
Overall, BS EN 17415‑1 provides guidelines for inspection of factory-made pipe assemblies to ensure that the intended quality level of the product is maintained in accordance with temperature and pressure. BS EN 17415‑1 also lets you build an efficient and the necessary requirements for the waste management system and recycling of materials used for district cooling pipes.
