What is BS EN 14451 about?
BS EN 14451 is a document on devices to prevent pollution by the backflow of potable water. BS EN 14451 specifies the field of application, the dimensional, physicochemical, design, hydraulic, mechanical, and the acoustic characteristics of in-line anti vacuum valve family D Type-A are applicable to in-line anti vacuum valves in denominations DN 10 up to DN 50.
BS EN 14451 also specifies the test methods and requirements for verifying their characteristics, the marking and the presentation at delivery. BS EN 14451 covers in-line anti vacuum valve family D Type A, intended to prevent pollution of potable water by backflow, caused by back siphoning only.
BS EN 14451 covers in-line anti vacuum valves of PN 10 that can work without modification or adjustment:
- At any pressure, up to 1 MPa (10 bar)
- With any pressure variation, up to 1 MPa (10 bar)
- In permanent duty at a limited temperature of 65 °C and for a maximum of 1 h at 90 °C

Why should you use BS EN 14451?
Consuming polluted water poses a health hazard. Measures need to be taken to prevent such pollution. BS EN 14451 specifies the devices to prevent pollution by the backflow of potable water. In respect of potential adverse effects on the quality of water intended for human consumption caused by the product is covered in BS EN 14451.
BS EN 14451 provides information on the in-line anti-vacuum valves which are mechanical devices with an air inlet that is closed when water flows through it at or above atmospheric pressure, but which opens to admit air if there is a sub-atmospheric pressure at the water inlet or when the flow stops and closes to be watertight when the flow of water is resumed at normal pressure.
Devices to prevent pollution by backflow of potable water are significantly required as water pressure may fail or be reduced when a water main bursts, pipes freeze, or there is an unexpectedly high demand on the water system. In-line anti-vacuum valves DN 10 to DN 50 help in reducing the pressure in the pipe and filter the potable water.
