What is PD CEN/TS 17659 about?

PD CEN/TS 17659 gives guidance for the design of a roof waterproofing system mechanically fastened to the structural deck in relation to the wind load resistance.

PD CEN/TS 17659 is intended to be used together with EN 16002 and the relevant clauses of EAD-030351- 00-0402-2019.

NOTE: This guideline does not include the separate fastening requirements of the insulation boards, the securement to upstands, perimeter fastening, flashings or other roof details.

Who is PD CEN/TS 17659 for?

PD CEN/TS 17659 on design guideline of a roof waterproofing system is useful for:

  • Builders
  • Civil engineers
  • Manufacturers of fastener

Why should you use PD CEN/TS 17659?

A mechanically attached roofing system uses flat roof insulation fasteners and stress plates that are designed and engineered to secure the insulation and cover boards to steel, wood, and concrete roof decks and are attached primarily with screws and metal plates rather than glue.

PD CEN/TS 17659 provides a technical specification to give guidance in designing a roof with a mechanically fastened waterproofing system.

PD CEN/TS 17659 provides the design value of the wind pressure and velocity and the determination of the authoritative admissible (design) value for the waterproofing system including various methods:

Method 1 – Full-scale dynamic wind load system test

Method 2 – Using data from fastener manufacturer's ETA – The weakest link in the system concept

Method 3 – On-site field pull-out testing of the fastener – the weakest link in the system concept

PD CEN/TS 17659 provides the measurement of fastener density and positioning of the fasteners.

Overall, these design guidelines on mechanically fastened roofing systems work well in places where a high wind uplift performance is required and is beneficial for the manufacturing unit as it is easily engineered, repaired, and cleaned, is lightweight, and adjustable to the unusual roof configuration.
