What is ISO 7539-6-Stress corrosion testing about?

ISO 7539-6 is the sixth part of the ISO 7539 multi-series that discusses the corrosion of metals and alloys. ISO 7539-6 specifies procedures for designing, preparing, and using pre-cracked specimens for investigating susceptibility to stress corrosion. ISO 7539-6 gives recommendations for the design, preparation, and use of pre-cracked specimens for investigating susceptibility to stress corrosion. The term “metal” as used in ISO 7539-6 includes alloys.

Who is ISO 7539-6-Stress corrosion testing for?

ISO 7539-6 on stress corrosion testing is relevant to:

  • Corrosion engineers
  • Mechanical engineers
  • Electrochemical engineers
  • Metallurgists
  • Testing authorities

Why should you use ISO 7539-6-Stress corrosion testing?

Stress corrosion testing with elements identifies significant threats such as external and internal corrosion. A particular advantage of the test method described in ISO 7539-6 is it allows data to be acquired, from which critical defect sizes, above which stress corrosion cracking can occur, can be estimated for components of known geometry subjected to known stresses. ISO 7539-6 also enables rates of stress corrosion crack propagation to be determined. The latter data can be considered when monitoring parts containing defects during service.

Overall, the guidelines of ISO 7539-6 help you to maintain the integrity of metal structures and machinery by identifying defects in them due to stress corrosion.

What’s changed since the last update?

BS EN ISO 7539-6:2018 supersedes BS EN ISO 7539-6:2011, which is withdrawn. BS EN ISO 7539-6:2018 replaces the third edition (ISO 7539-6:2011), which has been technically revised to revise Figure 14. This corrected version of ISO 7539-6:2018 incorporates the following corrections:

  • In Figure 2, the symbol “^” has been corrected to “≥” in two places
