What is BS EN 12546 about?

BS EN 12546 is the sixth part of the EN 1254 multi-series. BS EN 12546 specifies product characteristics, assessment methods, compliance criteria of test results and a designation system for push-fit fittings to join tubes of copper, plated copper, multilayer pipes and plastics pipes. The fitting ends have a nominal diameter from 6 mm to 54 mm. The fittings are designed for a service life of up to 50 years. BS EN 12546 applies to copper alloy fittings.

Products covered by BS EN 12546 are intended to be used in liquid applications such as:

  • Hot, cold or combined hot and cold water, including systems according to BS EN 806
  • Closed heating systems according to BS EN 12828
  • Cooling systems
  • Drainage systems
  • Fire protection systems including sprinkler systems according to BS EN 12845

Push-fit fittings may also have a plated or other decorative surface coating.

Fittings can be produced by machining, metal forming, casting, or fabrication.

Note: Products complying with this document may be used for several fluids including the transport of water intended for human consumption if they comply with the relevant national, regional or local regulatory provisions applicable in the place of use.

Who is BS EN 12546 for?

BS EN 12546 on push-fit fittings for use with metallic tubes, plastics and multilayer pipes is useful for:

  • Manufacturer of copper alloy push-fit fittings
  • Suppliers of parts and materials required for brazing of push-fit fittings
  • Installers
  • Quality assessment personnel
  • Civil and mechanical engineers
  • Trained and skilled technicians

Why should you use BS EN 12546?

Push-fit plumbing systems are reliable and do not deskill with plumbing. But as with any product, different standards of quality, whether that is the testing it is put under, how it is manufactured or its durability, will determine its efficiency.

BS EN 1254provide information on product characteristics like internal pressure, tightness, the release of dangerous substances, wall thickness threaded portions of adaptor fittings, the durability of resistance to stress corrosion and high temperature, alignment of the fitting ends, shapes for tightening systems, surface condition, testing, and sampling methods. Taking these factors into consideration, allow for an efficient and high-quality plumbing system.

As the buyer of BS EN 12546, you can be ensured of durable, corrosion and heat-resistant push-fit fittings that minimize the risk of leakage and contamination. As a result, BS EN 1254-6 takes into account safety and protection of the product end-user while also prolonging the service-life of the fitting. Moreover, guidance regarding the right installation and fittings of nut/screws is essential in the success of push-fit fittings for use with metallic tubes. plastics and multilayer pipes, in any given application. Overall, with BS EN 1254-6, you will be able to scale your business with these globally accepted guidelines.

What’s changed since the last update?

BS EN 12546:2021 supersedes BS EN 12546:2012, which is withdrawn.

The main changes to EN 12546:2012 are:

  • Improved alignment with plastic and multilayer pipe standards for hot and cold water applications
  • Separation of test methods into part 20
