What is BS EN 1254‑8 about?
BS EN 12542 is the eighth part of the EN 1254 multi-series. BS EN 1254‑8 specifies product characteristics, assessment methods, compliance criteria of test results and a designation system for fittings with radial and axial press ends for use with plastics and multilayer pipes. The fitting ends have a nominal diameter from 10 mm to 160 mm. The fittings are designed for a service life of up to 50 years.
Press fittings for use with plastics and multilayer pipes may also have flanged end connections according to EN 1092‑3.
Press fittings for use with plastics and multilayer pipes may also have a plated or other decorative surface coating.
Fittings can be produced by machining, metal forming, casting, or fabrication.
Products covered by BS EN 1254‑8 are intended to be used in:
- Liquid applications
- Gas applications
Who is BS EN 1254‑8 for?
BS EN 1254‑8 on press fittings for use with plastics and multilayer pipes is useful to:
- Manufacturer of copper alloy push-fit fittings
- Suppliers of parts and materials such as plastic and multilayer pipes
- Installers
- Quality assessment personnel
- Civil and mechanical engineers
- Trained and skilled technicians
Why should you use BS EN 1254‑8?
Unlike traditional brazing methods, press-fit involves no heat and no need to weld or solder joints and connections, thereby posing as a faster and low-cost alternative for the plumbing industry.
BS EN 1254‑8 provides information on product characteristics like internal pressure, tightness, resistance to high temperature for fittings with elastomeric seals, the release of dangerous substances, the wall thickness at threaded portions of adaptor fittings, the durability of resistance to stress corrosion and high temperature, alignment of the fitting ends, shapes for tightening systems, surface condition, testing, assessment and sampling methods. Taking these factors into consideration, allow for an efficient and high-quality plumbing system.
As the buyer of BS EN 1254‑8, you can be ensured of durable, corrosion and heat-resistant press-fit fittings that minimize the risk of leakage and contamination. As a result, BS EN 1254-8 takes into account safety and protection of the product end-user while also prolonging the service-life of the fitting. Moreover, guidance regarding the right installation and fittings of nut/screws is essential in the success of press-fit fittings for use with plastics and multilayer pipes, in any given application. Overall, with BS EN 1254-8, you will be able to scale your business with globally accepted guidelines.
What’s changed since the last update?
BS EN 1254‑8:2021 supersedes BS EN 1254‑8:2012, which is withdrawn.
The main changes compared to EN 1254‑8:2012 are:
- Improved alignment with plastics and multilayer pipe standards for hot and cold water applications;
- Separation of test methods into part 20
