What is BS EN 12543 standard about?

BS EN 12543 is the third part of the EN 1254 multi-series. BS EN 12543 specifies product characteristics, assessment methods, compliance criteria of test results and a designation system for fittings with compression ends for use with plastics and multilayer pipes which are defined in the applicable pipe standard.  BS EN 12543 applies to copper alloy fittings.

For the purposes of joining plastics pipes, the fitting ends have a nominal diameter from 6 mm to 160 mm. The fittings are designed for a service lifetime up to fifty years.

Under BS EN 1254-3, compression fittings for use with plastics and multilayer pipes may also have a plated or other decorative surface coating. Fittings can be produced by machining, metal forming, casting, or fabrication.

Products covered by BS EN 12543 are intended to be used in:

  • Liquid applications
  • Gas applications

Note: Products complying with this document may be used for several fluids including the transport of water intended for human consumption if they comply with the relevant national, regional or local regulatory provisions applicable in the place of use.

Who is BS EN 12543 standard for?

BS EN 12543 on compression fittings for use with plastics and multilayer pipes is useful for:

  • Manufacturer of compression fittings
  • Suppliers of parts like screws/nuts, pipes and tubes
  • Suppliers of copper and copper alloys
  • Installers
  • Quality assessment personnel
  • Mechanical engineers
  • Trained and skilled technicians

Why should you use BS EN 12543 standard?

Plastics and multilayer pipes are used to supply both cold and hot water. It is commonly used in heating systems, plumbing installations and underfloor heating. In this regard, compression fittings are a vital component in a large number of fluid power designs in various industries that effectively connect metal or hard plastic tubing.

BS EN 12543 provides information on product characteristics like internal pressure, tightness, the wall thickness at the threaded portions of fittings, testing, assessment and sampling methods, marking, labelling and packaging required to manufacture, pack and identify the product.

Test methods and test results provided in BS EN 12543 helps the user detect the defects at joints and improve the quality of the fitting joint.

As the buyer of BS EN 12543, you can be ensured of durable, corrosion and heat-resistant fittings that minimize the risk of leakage and contamination. As a result, BS EN 1254-3 takes into account safety and protection of the product end-user while prolonging the service-life of the compression fitting. Moreover, guidance regarding the right tubing, installation and fitting of nut/screws is essential in the success of compression fittings in any given application. Overall, with BS EN 1254-3, you will be able to scale your business with these globally accepted guidelines.

What’s changed since the last update?

BS EN 12543:2021 supersedes BS EN 12543:1998, which is withdrawn.

The main changes compared to EN 12543:1998 are:

  • Improved alignment with plastics and multilayer pipe standards for hot and cold water applications
  • Separation of test methods into part 20
