What is BS EN 19712 - Eddy current test about?

BS EN 1971 is a European standard on copper and copper alloys that discusses the criteria for eddy current testing. BS EN 19712 is the second part of a series of documents on seamless round copper and copper alloy tubes. BS EN 19712 specifies a procedure for the eddy current test with an internal probe for measuring defects on the inner surface of seamless round copper and copper alloy tubes.

BS EN 19712 applies particularly for finned tubes with high fins according to EN 12452.

The choice of the method for eddy current test:

  • With an encircling test coil on the outer surface according to EN 19711  or
  • With an internal probe on the inner surface according to EN 19712

is at the discretion of the manufacturer if there are no other agreements between the purchaser and the supplier.

Especially for finned tubes according to EN 12452 with high fins, it is suggested to use the eddy current test with an internal probe as described in BS EN 19712.

NOTE: The eddy current test method(s) required, together with the size range and acceptance level, are defined in the relevant product standard.

Who is BS EN 19712 - Eddy current test for?

BS EN 19712 on eddy current test is relevant to:

  • Manufacturer of seamless round copper and copper alloy tubes.
  • Laboratories and research centers

Why should you use BS EN 19712- Eddy current test?

Eddy current testing is a non-destructive testing (NDT) inspection method used for a variety of purposes, including flaw detection, material and coating thickness measurements, material identification, and establishing the heat treatment condition of certain materials.

BS EN 19711 navigates you through the detection of local discontinuities by internal probes systems, detection of non-local discontinuities by internal probes systems with lower detection levels, and other test methods.

With obedience and compliance to BS EN 19712, you can detect potential leaks and serious defects in seamless round copper and copper alloy tubes within the inner surface. With the guidance of BS EN 19712, you can detect material inhomogeneities and their positions throughout the length of tubes. The eddy current signals of material inhomogeneities are compared with reference signals of artificially produced test defects. It is possible to identify these inhomogeneities on the inner and outer surfaces as well as within the tube wall. Overall with BS EN 19712, you can be ensured that the products consistently meet and exceed quality assurance targets.

What’s changed since the last update?

BS EN 19712:2019 supersedes BS EN 19712:2011, which is withdrawn.

The following modifications were implemented in this new edition of EN 19712:

  • Updated normative references.
