What is BS EN 1977 - Copper drawing stock (wire rod) about?

BS EN 1977 specifies the composition, mechanical, electrical, and physical properties for high conductivity copper drawing stock (wire rod) suitable for fabrication into wire by cold drawing, principally for the manufacture of electrical conductors. BS EN 1977 covers drawing stock (wire rod), in nine grades of copper and nine silver-bearing copper grades. Normally, the cross-section is approximately circular, in a range of diameters from 6 mm.

Who is BS EN 1977 - Copper drawing stock (wire rod) for?

BS EN 1977 on copper and copper alloys is relevant to:

  • Manufacturer of copper drawing stock (wire rod)
  • Manufacturer of copper wire

Why should you use BS EN 1977 - Copper drawing stock (wire rod)?

A copper wire rod is a finished product in a copper plant rolled from the billet in a wire rod mill. It is mainly used to produce copper wire which is then subjected to further processing. BS EN 1977 provides composition, elongation, electrical properties, annealability, hydrogen embrittlement, dimensions and tolerances, surface condition, sampling, and test methods.

As a user of BS EN 1977, you can be ensured of the technical requirements of copper drawing stock (wire rod). With obedience and compliance to BS EN 1977, you can efficiently manufacture high-quality copper drawing stock (wire rod) suitable for fabrication into wire by cold drawing. With BS EN 1977 you can be ensured that the products consistently meet and exceed quality assurance targets. BS EN 1977 exemplifies the required chemical composition, electrical properties that help you achieve precision in terms of product functionality and specification.

What’s changed since the last update?

BS EN 1977:2013 supersedes BS EN 1977:1998 which is withdrawn. In comparison with EN 1977:1998, the following significant technical changes were made:

  • Table 2, Cu-FRHC, Other elements: content has been modified and a new footnote “d” has been added
  • 6.4 and 8.4 “Annealability” have been modified
  • A.2 “Standard annealed copper (IACS)” has been modified
  • Annex B (normative) “Rapid Elongation Test method (AR-Test) for diameter 8 mm Cu-ETP1 wire rod” has been added
