What is BS EN 60546-1 - Performance of controllers with analogue signals about?

BS EN 60546-1 is the first part of the BS EN 60546 multi-series that discusses controllers with analogue signals that are used in industrial process control systems.

BS EN 60546-1 applies to proportional-integral-derivative (PID) pneumatic and electric industrial-process controllers using analogue continuous input and output signals which are in accordance with current international standards.

It should be noted that while the tests specified herein cover controllers having such signals, they can be applied in principle to controllers having different but continuous signals. It should be also noted that BS EN 60546-1 has been written for pneumatic and electric industrial-process controllers with only analogue components and is not necessarily to be used for controllers with microprocessors.

BS EN 60546-1 is intended to specify uniform methods of test for evaluating the performance of industrial-process PID controllers with analogue input and output signals.

The test conditions specified in BS EN 60546-1, for example, the range of ambient temperatures, power supply, etc., are used when no other values are agreed upon by the manufacturer and the user.

Who is BS EN 60546-1 - Performance of controllers with analogue signals for?

BS EN 60546-1 on performance evaluation methods for controllers with analogue signals is useful for:

  • Manufacturers of controllers
  • Inspection authorities
  • Testing laboratory personnel

Why should you use BS EN 60546-1 - Performance of controllers with analogue signals?

Industrial process control systems are used for various kinds of social infrastructure, and they play important roles in realizing their control functions and ensuring their safety. The controller devices using analogue signals regulate process conditions through manual input via analogue dials. These devices can be affected by their operating conditions and hence need to be regularly evaluated.

The methods of evaluation given in this BS EN 60546-1 can be used by manufacturers to determine the performance of their products and by users, or independent testing establishments, to verify manufacturers’ performance specifications.

Overall, the test methods described in BS EN 60546-1 enable its users to determine the performance quality of analogue controllers, which can help you to maintain and extend their operational lifecycle.

What’s changed since the last update?

BS EN 60546-1:2010 supersedes EN 60546-1:1993. BS EN 60546-1:2010 constitutes a minor technical revision made to bring terms, measurement units and references up to date.
