What is this BS EN 61883-1 - Consumer audio/ video equipment about?

BS EN 61883-1 discusses consumer audio/video equipment and digital interface. BS EN 61883-1 is the first part of the BS EN 61883 multi-series on consumer audio/video equipment that specifies a digital interface for consumer electronic audio/video equipment using IEEE 1394

BS EN 61883-1 describes the general packet format, data flow management, connection management for audio-visual data, and also the general transmission rules for control commands. BS EN 61883-1 conforms to the CSR architecture. Details of its registers are specified by IEEE 1394.

Who is BS EN 61883-1 - Consumer audio/ video equipment for?

BS EN 61883-1 on consumer audio/video equipment is useful for:

  • Manufacturers of products that provide audio output (televisions, phones)
  • Audio equipment manufactures
  • Audio programmers
  • Music producers
  • Sound technicians
  • Recording and dubbing studios
  • Regulatory bodies

Why should you use BS EN 61883-1 - Consumer audio/ video equipment

BS EN 61883-1 provides a protocol that transfers a stream of source packets from an application on a device to an application on other devices. A source packet is assumed to have a fixed length, which is defined for each type of data.

The data rate can be variable. The object of BS EN 61883-1 is to define a transmission protocol for audio-visual data and control commands which provide for the interconnection of digital audio and video equipment, using IEEE 1394.

What’s changed since the last update?

BS EN 61883-1:2009 supersedes EN 61883-1:2003, which is withdrawn.BS EN 61883-1:2009 includes some technical changes with respect to EN 61883-1:2003

These include:

  • Allocation of a new FMT code for the 1394 Trade Association specification ‘601 over 1394’
  • Clarification of the meaning of FMT code
  • Harmonization of EN 61883-1 with IEEE 1394.1 for speeds over S400
