What is BS EN 1610- Construction and testing of drains and sewers about?

BS EN 1610 details best practices for ensuring optimal performance and safety of drains and sewers.

BS EN 1610 is applicable to the construction and related testing of drains and sewers usually buried in the ground and usually operating under gravity but up to 0,5 kPa when surcharged.

BS EN 1610 is applicable to drains and sewers installed in trenches, under embankments, or above ground. For trenchless construction, EN 12889 applies.

Note: Further information is given by reference to national documents listed in Annex D.

Who is BS EN 1610- Construction and testing of drains and sewers for?

BS EN 1610 on construction and testing of drains and sewers is useful for:

  • Wastewater and drainage specialists
  • Construction designers, specifiers, and engineers
  • Installers of drains and sewers
  • Local authorities
  • Civil engineers
  • Wastewater treatment plants
  • Environmental consultants

Why should you use BS EN 1610- Construction and testing of drains and sewers

Pipelines and manholes are engineering structures whose stability and safety in operation are based on the combined performance of construction components, embedment, initial and main backfill, and native soil.

BS EN 1610 gives updated recommendations on drains and sewers installed in trenches, under embankments, or above ground and frequently operating under gravity or at pressure up to 0.5 kPa when surcharged.

BS EN 1610 also covers components and materials, embedment installation, connections to pipes and manholes, and inspection criteria.

Additionally, other local or national regulations may apply, e.g., concerning health and safety, pavement reinstatement, and requirements for tightness testing.

The pipes, fittings, and joint materials supplied, as well as site work such as pipe bedding, pipe jointing, side filling, and backfilling, are all critical components in establishing a structure with appropriate performance for the planned service life, according to BS EN 1610.

What’s changed since the last update?

BS EN 1610:2015 supersedes BS EN 1610:1998 which is withdrawn. BS EN 1610:2015 includes some technical changes with respect to BS EN 1610:1998 that address issues relating to air and water-tightness testing and durability. The changes include:

  • Updating of references and their associated requirements
  • Addition of requirements for the soil-pipe-system
