What is this BS EN 10202 - Electrolytic tinplate and electrolytic chromium/chromium oxide coated steel about?

BS EN 10202 discusses cold reduced tinmill products with a focus on electrolytic tinplate and electrolytic chromium/chromium oxide coated steel. BS EN 10202 specifies requirements for tinmill products in the form of sheets or coils. Tinmill products consist of single and double reduced low carbon mild steel electrolytically coated with either tin (tinplate) or chromium/chromium oxide (ECCS) or (ECCS-RC).

Single reduced tinmill products are specified in nominal thicknesses that are multiples of 0,005 mm from 0,16 mm up to and including 0,49 mm. Double reduced tinmill products are specified in nominal thicknesses that are multiples of 0,005 mm from 0,12 mm up to and including 0,29 mm. BS EN 10202 applies to coils and sheets cut from coils in nominal minimum widths of 600 mm.

Who is BS EN 10202 - Electrolytic tinplate and electrolytic chromium/chromium oxide coated steel for?

BS EN 10202 on electrolytic tinplate and electrolytic chromium/chromium oxide coated steel is useful for:

  • Steel plants
  • Tinmill product manufacturers
  • Testing facilities
  • Tinmill suppliers

Why should you use BS EN 10202 - Electrolytic tinplate and electrolytic chromium/chromium oxide coated steel?

The tin coating is stripped from tinplate by immersion in Clarke’s solution, followed by cleaning and drying. BS EN 10202 provides a method that covers the determination of chromium on tinplate with the use of diphenylcarbazide. BS EN 10202 is applicable to electrolytic tinplate that has been passivated in an electrolyte containing chromium ions. BS EN 10202 provides a method that covers the determination of Titanium content in the Ti/Zr- passivation layer with the use of Inductively Coupled Plasma.

BS EN 10202 lays out a method that covers the determination of chromium present as oxides and hydroxides on the surface of untreated chromium coated steel.

What’s changed since the last update?

BS EN 10202:2022 supersedes old, which is withdrawn. BS EN 10202:2022 includes some technical changes with respect to old.

These include:

  • Normative references have been updated
  • Revision of the definition of electrolytic chromium coated steel with the addition of the symbol ECCSRC which allows the use of a trivalent process
  • Rewording of Clause 5 with the split into mandatory information (5.1) and options (5.2)
  • Modification of Clause 6 with the rewording of 6.1 and the addition of 6.2 and 6.3 about annealing and finish respectively
