What is BS EN 13523 about?

Metals can be vulnerable to weathering. Coatings protect metal from such damage. Coated metals are popular because they provide resistance to abrasion, chemical damage, corrosion, electricity and galvanization, and operational wear.

BS EN 13523 is a multi-series standard on coil coated metals. EN 13523-0 introduces the series. EN 13523-0 specifies the overall scope for all parts of the EN 13523 series. EN 13523-0 gives definitions common to all parts and describes how sampling and preparation of test panels for most of the individual test methods are to be carried out.

Who is BS EN 13523 for?

BS EN 13523 on coil coated metals is applicable to:

  • Paint industry
  • Coil coating chemical facilities
  • Sheet metal industry
  • Furniture industry
  • Steel and aluminum industries
  • Automotive, mechanical industries

Why should you use BS EN 13523?

EN 13523-0, being the introductory document for the coil coated metals series, provides you with definitions for terms that will be used throughout the series. Also, for all test methods mentioned throughout the series, EN 13523-0 describes the preparation and conditioning of the sample test panels. So EN 13523-0 is your foundation and reference document for the series.

Some of the tests included in the EN 13523 series for coil coated metals are – resistance to cracking, colour difference, foam adhesion, resistance to staining, and the cupping test.

What’s changed since the last update?

BS EN 13523-0:2021 supersedes BS EN 13523-0:2014, which is withdrawn. BS EN 13523-0:2021 includes some technical changes with respect to BS EN 13523-0:2014. These include:

  • The definitions have been aligned with those in EN ISO 4618
  • The bibliography has been updated
  • The list of the existing parts of EN 13523 has been updated
  • The text has been editorially revised, and the normative references have been updated
