What is BS 6593 – Code of practice about?
BS 6593 is a British standard that discusses the On-site non-mechanical jointing of plied textile and steel reinforced conveyor belting using a code of practice. A code of practice is a set of written rules which explains how people working in a particular profession should behave.
This code of practice provides guidance on the procedures to be followed when making non-mechanical joints in plied textile and steel reinforced conveyor belting on site. Both hot and cold processes are considered.
Note: BS 6593 does not cover mechanical joints in conveyor belting.

Why should you use BS 6593 – Code of practice?
Steel cord conveyor belts are highly wear-resistant and used principally for long-haul conveying, heavy loads and physically demanding applications. They are especially suitable for high-mass or high-volume flows and abrasive materials.
BS 6593 provides you with the safety guidelines for the jointing materials in which the handling jointing materials are used in the preparation of vulcanized joints for the precautions of:
- Do not use in a confined unventilated area
- Avoid breathing the vapors
- Wear protective clothing at all times when handling vulcanizing cement and pastes
- Avoid contact with the skin and eyes. In case of accidental contact, treat the affected area with copious quantities of water. For eyes, follow the same treatment and immediately obtain medical aid
- Containers of cement/paste should be kept closed at all times except when actually in use and smoking should be prohibited
- Accidental spillage should be cleaned immediately. The application of any absorbent dry powder will help to remove stickiness and facilitate the removal of the spillage
- After use, all containers should be removed from the site.
