ISO 17492 discusses clothing for protection against heat and flame. ISO 17492 is an international standard on the determination of heat transmission on exposure to both flame and radiant heat ensuring protection against thermal hazards.

ISO 17492 specifies a test method for measuring the heat transferred through horizontally mounted flame-resistant textile materials when exposed to a combination of convective and radiant heat. The exposure conditions are adjusted to be a 50/50 mixture of pure convective heat and pure radiant heat. The total exposure heat flux is 84 kW/m2.

The test method specified by ISO 17492 applies to any type of sheet material used either as a single layer or in a multilayer construction when all structures or sub-assemblies are made of flame-resistant materials.

Note 1: The method under ISO 17492 applies to materials that are not flame resistant.

Note 2: The test method specified by ISO 17492 does not apply to the evaluation of materials exposed to any other type of thermal energy sources, such as radiant heat only or flame contact only.

Note3: Some, but not all, textiles materials can ignite and continue to burn after exposure to the convective and radiant heat produced by the method specified in ISO 17492.

Note 4: The test method specified by ISO 17492 does not necessarily correlate to the heat-insulation performance of vertically oriented flame-resistant textile materials when exposed to convective and radiant heat or used in actual clothing configurations.

Note 5: It is not recommended to use ISO 17492 to describe or appraise a fire hazard or fire risk of materials, products, or assemblies under actual fire conditions.

  • Modifications have been made to Figures 1, 2 and 3
