What is ISO 23919 about?

ISO 23919 is a standard that covers the ion chromatography test method for cigarettes that enables accurate determination of ammonia in cigarettes and regulate its content.

ISO 23919 specifies a method for the quantification of ammonia by ion chromatography in mainstream smoke using ISO 3308 smoking parameters.

ISO 23919 is applicable to cigarettes with ammonia yields between 1 μg/cigarette and 30 μg/cigarette.

Note: ISO 23919 does not apply to -

  • Determination of ammonia in dark-air cured cigarettes

Who is ISO 23919 for?

ISO 23919 on the determination of ammonia in cigarettes applies to:

  • Manufacturers of cigarettes
  • Distributors and importers of cigarettes
  • Testing houses and labs for cigarettes
  • Government regulators

Why should you use ISO 23919?

Tobacco filler contains ammonia which is used as a chemical additive. Ammonia chemicals raise alkalinity, making nicotine easier to absorb into the body and increasing nicotine dependency and addiction in smokers.

ISO 23919 provides you guidance on the ion chromatography method that includes two alternative trapping systems which are, a glass fibre filter pad followed by impinger traps and impregnated glass fibre filter pad followed by a glass fibre filter pad to accurately determine the ammonia content in cigarettes.

ISO 23919 method is based on the results obtained in a collaborative study that involved 17 laboratories from 8 countries using cigarettes manufactured from a range of blend styles that ensures the authenticity and accuracy of the test method for determining ammonia.

ISO 23919 ensures that you perform the method accurately by providing you with a step-by-step procedure for the method.

The guidance in ISO 23919 enables you to identify ammonia content in cigarettes to regulate its content and limit dependency and addiction in cigarettes.
