What is BS EN 13209-1 about?
BS EN 13209-1 is the first part of the document which discusses about Child carriers. BS EN 13209-1 specifies the safety requirements and test methods for child back carriers with framed support to carry a child in a seated position. Framed back carriers are intended for children from 6 months of age up to a maximum weight of 18 kg and are designed to carry the child on the carer’s back and be attached to a carer’s torso allowing a hands-free operation e.g., standing, walking.

Note2: BS EN 13209-1 does not cover framed back carriers designed for children with special needs.

Why should you use BS EN 13209-1?
BS EN 13209-1 provides safety requirements and test methods to minimize the risk of deaths and injuries associated with the use of frame child carriers, specifically incidents related to structural integrity, such as poor-quality stitching on straps, detachment of the cloth component from the frame, loose screws, and breakage of the frame, stability of the frame child carrier, leg holes that are too large and allow a child to slip out or almost slip out of the carrier, and inadequacy of restraints.
Manufacturer will be able to provide risk assessment reports contain information describing the types of hazards, the severity of the hazards and any other knowledge regarding the harm that could happen to the users.
What’s changed since the last update?
BS EN 13209-1:2021 supersedes EN 13209‑1:2004, which is withdrawn.
In BS EN 13209-1:2021 comparison with EN 13209‑1:2004, the following changes were made:
- Clarified the scope, which includes a maximum weight for which the product is intended
- Introduction of additional test masses
- Reduction in tolerances
- Update of chemical requirements
- Update of flammability requirements and test methods
- Increase in size of bounded openings in recognition of the age of the child for which the product is intended
- Improvement of entanglement hazard requirements and addition of test methods
- Improvement of the test methods for the carer’s attachment system
