What is BS EN IEC 61315 - Fibre-optic power meters about?
BS EN IEC 61315 is a series on fibre-optic power meters. Fibre-optic power meters is a device used to measure the power in an optical signal. BS EN IEC 61315 is applicable to instruments measuring radiant power emitted from sources that are typical for the fibre-optic communications industry. These sources include laser diodes, light-emitting diodes (LEDs) and fibre-type sources. Both divergent and collimated radiations are covered.
BS EN IEC 61315 defines the calibration of power meters to be performed by calibration laboratories or by power meter manufacturers and also defines all of the steps involved in the calibration process such as establishing the calibration conditions, carrying out the calibration, calculating the uncertainty and the traceability.
Who is BS EN IEC 61315 - Fibre-optic power meters for?
BS EN IEC 61315:2019 on fibre-optic power meters is applicable for:
- Fibre-optic communications industry
- Calibration Laboratories
- Internet communication providers
- Medical facilities
- Industrial sectors
- Government sectors
- Manufacturers of fibre-optic power meters
Why should you use BS EN IEC 61315 - Fibre-optic power meters?
Optical power meters usually display time-averaged power. So for pulse measurements, the signal duty cycle must be known to calculate the peak power value. Fibre-optic power meters covered by BS EN IEC 61315 are designed to measure optical power from fibre optic sources as accurately as possible.
BS EN IEC 61315 application allows us to accurately measure the power of the optical signal passed through a cable and is also used to measure the power of fibre optic equipment. With this method, we can commence the transmission which is precise and with high power for a large amount of data transfer.
The absolute power calibration describes how to determine the ratio between the value of the input power and the power meter's result. This sync helps in the final operation of the input-output process. Using BS EN IEC 61315 you can measure radiant power emitted from sources that are typical for the fibre-optic communications industry.
What’s changed since the last update?
BS EN IEC 61315:2019 supersedes BS EN 61315:2006, which is withdrawn and includes technical changes with respect to BS EN 61315:2006. These include:
- Update of terms and definitions and 5.1, including Table 1 (a new type of source)
- Update of Annex A and addition of Annex B on dB conversion
