What is BS IEC 60853-3 - Cycling and emergency current rating of cables about?

BS IEC 60853-3 is part of IEC 60853 on calculation of cyclic and emergency current rating of cables. BS IEC 60853-3 gives a method for calculating the cyclic rating factor, for cables of all voltages, where partial drying out of the surrounding soil is anticipated.

The method outlined in BS IEC 60853-3 is based on one of the three methods published in a CIGRE1 document.

The method is applicable to any type of cable, but it is recommended that it should be applied only to installations of one multi-core cable or to three single-core cables or to groups of circuits where the inter-circuit spacing is sufficient to permit free vertical movement of soil moisture between the zones of dry soil associated with each circuit. BS IEC 60853-3 does not preclude the use of other methods of calculation where full details of the load cycle are not known.

In BS IEC 60853-3 it is assumed that the entire region surrounding a cable or cables has uniform thermal characteristics prior to drying out; the only non-uniformity being that caused by drying. Consequently, the method given in BS IEC 60853-3 is not applied, without further consideration, to installations where special backfills, having properties different from the site soil, are used.

Who is BS IEC 60853-3 - Cycling and emergency current rating of cables for?

BS IEC 60853-3 on cycling and emergency current rating of cables is useful for:

  • Electrical engineer
  • Manufacturer of winding wire
  • Manufacturer of heavy electrical equipment
  • Manufacturer of electrical appliances
  • Power Distribution companies
  • Quality assurance officer

Why should you use BS IEC 60853-3 - Cycling and emergency current rating of cables

While designing and manufacturing electrical equipment it is important to rate components for informing customers. This in turn can ensure safety from misuse of equipment.

BS IEC 60853-3 provides guidelines for calculating the cycling rating factor for all voltage, where partial drying out of the surrounding soil is anticipated. Use of BS IEC 60853-3 increases credibility of the manufactured cables and helps manufacturers and suppliers adhere to the guidelines to increase safety of the cables and electrical appliances.

BS IEC 60853-3 helps users to stay aware of the capabilities of the machine they are using and thus stay safe. BS IEC 60853−3 also makes it easier for the user to choose the right product for themselves based on their requirements.
