What is PAS 1958 about?

PAS 1958 supports businesses involved in data and information management in the built environment sector to prepare for AI adoption.

It provides guidance to help you navigate existing data and information standards that are relevant to the sector and improve your understanding of how they connect, to support digitalization.

The standard is sponsored by Innovate UK as part of the BridgeAI programme.

What does it cover?

PAS 1958 helps navigate key standards relating to data and information within the built environment and covers:

  • key concepts from existing data and information management standards; and
  • connections between the key concepts

Why does it matter?

There are many built environment standards relating to data and information, which can be difficult for businesses to navigate or understand how they fit together without a framework. As AI-generated information increases, the risk posed by incorrect or inconsistent information also increases.

PAS 1958 provides a framework to help businesses understand the existing built environment standards landscape and how concepts connect.

The guidance in this PAS can help businesses of all sizes, including small and medium enterprises:

  1. Gain a clear understanding of existing built environment data and information standards.
  2. Improve data and information management and decision-making.
  3. Save time when navigating the built environment standards landscape.
  4. Understand how different standards-related concepts connect.

Who is it for?

This PAS is of use to those who interact with the built environment, including:

  • individuals in organizations who are responsible for or influence data and/or information management tasks across any stage of the asset life cycle;
  • standards developers;
  • data or information-based bodies and specialist groups; and
  • software developers.

This standard might also be of interest to other individuals who acquire, produce, and use information across the built environment.
