What is ISO 23658 about?  

ISO 23658 is an international standard on buildings and civil engineering works which covers testing of adhesion properties using a bead peel test. 

ISO 23658 specifies a method for evaluating the adhesion of sealants with a minimum elongation at a break of 25 % (according to ISO 8339, Method A or B) on various substrates. This test method can be used for one-component and multi-component sealants. This method is typically used for elastic sealants but can be also used for plastic sealants. For plastic sealants, the test can be more difficult and needs to be carried out by experienced technicians. 

An adhesion test according to ISO 23658 can also be conducted for process monitoring and quality assurance accompanying production.

Why should you use ISO 23658?  

Sealant beads are applied onto substrates and after any required conditioning and optional aging, the beads are manually peeled from the substrate to determine the adhesion properties. 

ISO 23658 provides the requirement for sample preparation to test sealant materials, substrates and surface treatment. 

ISO 23658 specifies the details of the method used for the sealant bead application with mold and without mold and the curing or setting of the test specimens may be aged artificially to test the long-term adhesion properties. 

The peel test procedure is described in ISO 23658 gripping the substrate in order to immobilize the test specimen prior to the peel test to test the adhesion of the sealant bead. 

Overall, these test methods enable you to make sealant beads in order to analyse the impact of pre-treatment, substrate, and adhesive on the long-term durability of adhesively bonded joints and seals and to verify product quality.
