What is BS EN 15684 about?

BS EN 15684 specifies requirements for performance and testing of Mechatronic Cylinders and their keys and/or electronic keys.  BS EN 15684 establishes categories of use based on performance tests and grades of security based on design requirements and on performance tests that simulate an attack. BS EN 15684 includes an assessment of additional features when they are included in the cylinder design.

The suitability of cylinders for use on fire or smoke-door assemblies is determined by fire performance tests conducted in addition to the performance testing specified by BS EN 15684.

NOTE: BS EN 15684 applies to cylinders for such locks designed to be normally used in buildings. It also applies to cylinders for use with other hardware products such as exit devices, door operators, etc., or monitoring facilities and alarm systems.

NOTE: BS EN 15684 does not cover any other element of a system, other than those directly involved in the control of a cylinder.

Who is BS EN 15684 for?

BS EN 15684 on mechatronic cylinders is useful for:

  • Manufacturers of mechatronic doors and windows
  • Mechanical and electronic engineers

Why should you use BS EN 15684?

The mechatronic cylinder is a device with an integrated or a remote electronic system, which is to be used with a lock for the purpose of operating the lock and/or detaining elements after verifying the authorization of an electronic key.

BS EN 15684 gives the requirements and test procedures of mechatronic cylinders and their keys to ensure the strength and stability of electronic keys. Also provides information regarding environmental resistance and key and credential-related security. Operational tests and performance tests are given in BS EN 15684 while the installation of mechatronic cylinders with the electronic key in a door.

Overall, BS EN 15684 helps in the manufacturing of mechatronic cylinders along with the electronic key to ensure their durability, safety, and suitability for use on fire/smoke resistant doors.

What’s changed since the last update?

BS EN 15684:2020 supersedes EN 15684:2012. BS EN 15684:2020 includes some technical changes with respect to EN 15684:2012. These include:

  • Classification - minimum number of codes changed to credential security
  • Classification - attack resistance refers to EN 1303
  • Credential security introduced, with the same principle as in EN 16867
