What is BS EN 10277 - Bright steel products about?

BS EN 10277 is a European standard on bright steel products that discusses the best procedures and specifications required for manufacturing high-quality bright steel bars. BS EN 10277 specifies the technical delivery requirements for bright steel bars in the drawn, peeled/turned or ground condition and they are intended for mechanical purposes, for example for machine parts. The bright bars are subdivided into the following steel types:

  • Non-alloy general engineering steels
  • Non-alloy free-cutting steels
  • Non-alloy and alloy case-hardening steels
  • Non-alloy and alloy steels for quenching and tempering

BS EN 10277 lists the mechanical characteristics for products up to 100 mm in thickness. For larger dimensions, the manufacturer and purchaser agree on mechanical properties at the time of inquiry and order. Bright steel products of stainless steel are to be found in EN 10088-3.

In addition to BS EN 10277, the general technical delivery requirements of EN 10021 are applicable

NOTE: BS EN 10277  does not cover cold-rolled products and cut lengths produced from strips or sheets by cutting.

Who is BS EN 10277 - Bright steel products for?

BS EN 10277 on bright steel products is relevant to:

  • Manufacturer of bright steel bars

Why should you use BS EN 10277- Bright steel products?

Bright steel is usually a carbon steel alloy that has had the surface condition improved by drawing, peeling, or grinding over the hot rolled finish supplied by the steel mill. Bright steel is essentially black steel material that has had further processing

BS EN 10277 navigates you through the manufacturing process, treatment and surface condition at delivery, chemical composition, mechanical properties and hardenability, machinability, non-metallic inclusions, decarburization, shape, dimensions and tolerances, surface quality, inspection.

BS EN 10277 exemplifies the required mechanical properties that help you achieve precision in terms of the product specification.

As a user of BS EN 10277, you can be ensured of requirements for bright steel bars. With obedience and compliance to BS EN 10277, you can efficiently manufacture high-quality bright steel bars. With BS EN 10277 you can be ensured that the products consistently meet and exceed quality assurance targets. BS EN 10277 provides you with comprehensive information useful throughout the process of production.

What’s changed since the last update?

BS EN 10277:2018 supersedes BS EN 102771:2008, BS EN 102772:2008, BS EN 102773:2008, BS EN 102774:2008 and BS EN 102775:2008, which are withdrawn.

The following changes have been made in comparison to the previous edition EN 10277-1:2008 to EN 10277-5:2008:

  • The five parts of EN 10277-1 to EN 10277-5 were merged into one part
  • The dimensional requirements for bright steel products were added to this standard
  • For the steels for general engineering use, the steel grades E295GC, E355GC, C10, C15, C16, and C55 were deleted and the grades C25, C30, and C50 were added
  • For the free-cutting steels, the grades 9S20, 17SMn20, 35SMn20, and 35SMnPb20 were added
  • For the case hardening steels, the grades 16MnCrB 5, 15NiCrS4, 15NiCr13 and 17NiCrMoS6-4 were deleted, the grades C10E, C15E, C16E, 16MnCr5, 20Cr4, 20CrS4, 20MnCr5, 24CrMo4, 24CrMoS4, 16NiCr4, 16NiCrS4, 20NiCrMo2-2, 17NiCrMo6-4, 17NiCrMoS6-4 and 18CrNiMo7-6 were added
