What is BS EN 12697-24 - Characterizing the fatigue of bituminous mixtures about

BS EN 12697-24 discusses methods for characterizing the fatigue of bituminous mixtures.

BS EN 12697-24 specifies the methods for characterizing the fatigue of bituminous mixtures using alternative tests, including bending tests and direct and indirect tensile tests. The tests are performed on compacted bituminous material under sinusoidal loading or other controlled loadings, using several types of specimens and supports.

The procedure is used:

  • To rank bituminous mixtures based on resistance to fatigue
  • As a guide to relative performance on the pavement
  • To obtain data for estimating the structural behaviour of the road
  • To judge test data according to specifications for bituminous mixtures

BS EN 12697-24 does not impose a particular type of testing device, the precise choice of the test conditions depends on the possibilities and the working range of the device used. For the choice of specific test conditions, the requirements of the product standards for bituminous mixtures need to be respected. The applicability of BS EN 12697-24 is described in the product standards for bituminous mixtures.

Who is BS EN 12697-24 - Characterizing the fatigue of bituminous mixtures for?

BS EN 12697-24 on the characterizing the fatigue of bituminous mixtures is useful for:

  • Manufacturers and suppliers of bituminous mixtures and asphalt
  • Suppliers of construction materials
  • Construction and civil engineers
  • Contractors
  • Road maintenance authorities

Why should you use BS EN 12697-24 - Characterizing the fatigue of bituminous mixtures

BS EN 12697-24 specifies the methods for characterizing the fatigue of bituminous mixtures using alternative tests, including bending tests and direct and indirect tensile tests which helps to determine the road performance.

Through BS EN 12697-24, you will be able to deliver more durable and long-lasting products and services, that could reduce maintenance requirements while mitigating risk arising from layer delamination or water ingress.

What is changed since the last update?

BS EN 12697-24:2018 supersedes BS EN 12697‑24:2012, which is withdrawn.

BS EN 12697-24:2018 includes some technical changes with respect to BS EN 12697‑24:2012. These include:

  • The series title no longer makes the method exclusively for hot mix asphalt
  • Editing of several text sections to clarify the procedures
  • “Load applications” amended to “load cycles"
  • Completion of Figure E.3: Line 1 added to extensometer in front view figure [E.2.5.3]
  • Introduction of new annex for cyclic indirect tensile test on cylindrical specimens (CIT-CY)
