What is BS EN 12697-23 - Indirect tensile strength of cylindrical specimens of bituminous mixtures about ?

BS EN 12697-23 discusses bituminous mixtures. BS EN 12697-23 specifies a test method for determining the (splitting) indirect tensile strength of cylindrical specimens of bituminous mixtures.

Who is BS EN 12697-23 - Indirect tensile strength of cylindrical specimens of bituminous mixtures for ?

BS EN 12697-23 on indirect tensile strength of cylindrical specimens of bituminous mixtures is useful for:

  • Manufacturers and suppliers of bituminous mixtures and asphalt
  • Suppliers of construction materials
  • Construction and civil engineers
  • Contractors
  • Road maintenance authorities

Why should you use BS EN 12697-23 - Indirect tensile strength of cylindrical specimens of bituminous mixtures

Indirect tensile strength measures the strength and adherence against fatigue, temperature cracking, and rutting. BS EN 12697-23 specifies a test method for determining the (splitting) indirect tensile strength of cylindrical specimens of bituminous mixtures used to assess the tensile properties of the bituminous mixtures. BS EN 12697-23 essentially emphasizes studying the effect of filler materials, test temperature on the tensile properties and moisture susceptibility characteristics of bituminous concrete mix. BS EN 12697-23 can be helpful in guiding the choice of which asphalt mixture is more appropriate to use, depending on the climate conditions of the region it will be placed.

Overall, BS EN 12697-23 aim to improve the durability and strength of bituminous mixtures by determining the (splitting) indirect tensile strength of cylindrical specimens of bituminous mixtures.

What’s changed since the last update?

BS EN 12697-23:2017 supersedes BS EN 1269723:2003 which is withdrawn.

BS EN 12697-23:2017 includes some technical changes with respect to BS EN 1269723:2003. These include:

  • The series title no longer makes the method exclusively for hot mix asphalt
  • EN 12697-12 deleted as Normative reference, including any references to EN 12697-12 in this test method
  • Addition of device for test specimen with diameter 80 mm and 120 mm
  • Addition of tolerances on diameter for specimens with diameter 80 mm and 120 mm
  • Introduction of requirements for specimen age
  • Unit for ITS amended to kilopascals (kPa). Formula corrected accordingly
