What is PD CEN/TS 12697-52 - Bituminous mixtures in terms of oxidative ageing about?

PD CEN/TS 12697-52 specifies two sets of procedures for conditioning bituminous mixtures in terms of oxidative ageing. Procedures A.1 and A.2 can be applied on loose bituminous mixture before compaction of specimens, procedures B.1 and B.2 on compacted specimens. Material conditioned by PD CEN/TS 12697-52 can be used for further testing to assess the effect of oxidative ageing on characteristics of bituminous mixtures and thus on their durability and recyclability. Alternatively, the binder can be extracted from a conditioned mixture to assess the effect of oxidative ageing on binder characteristics cs taking into account the potential effects of mineral aggregates on ageing.

Note: PD CEN/TS 12697-52 is applicable to bituminous mixtures manufactured in the laboratory or in a mixing plant. Procedures B.1 and B.2 is applicable to specimens from laboratory production or samples taken from the field.

Who is PD CEN/TS 12697-52 - Bituminous mixtures in terms of oxidative ageing for?

PD CEN/TS 12697-52 on bituminous mixtures in terms of oxidative ageing is useful for:

  • Manufacturers and suppliers of bituminous mixtures and asphalt
  • Suppliers of construction materials
  • Construction and civil engineers
  • Contractors
  • Road maintenance authorities

Why should you use PD CEN/TS 12697-52 - Bituminous mixtures in terms of oxidative ageing

The aging of bituminous binders is one of the key factors determining the lifetime of an asphalt pavement. The process of aging involves chemical and/or physical property changes that usually make bituminous materials harder and more brittle, thus increasing risk of pavement failure. The aging-related pavement failure modes include cracking (thermal or traffic induced) and ravelling.

PD CEN/TS 12697-52 helps engineers to assess the influence of bituminous mixtures in terms of oxidative ageing. PD CEN/TS 12697-52 helps in understanding and quantifying the effects of aging on fundamental characteristics of asphalt mixtures.
