What is BS EN 12697‑42 about?
BS EN 12697‑42 is the 42nd part of the multi-series of documents that is applicable to the amount of foreign matter in reclaimed asphalt.
BS EN 12697‑42 specifies a visual method of determining the amount and components of coarse foreign matter in reclaimed asphalt. A method for determining the amount and components of finer foreign matter in reclaimed asphalt is given in Annex A.
For the use of reclaimed asphalt in bituminous mixtures it is important to know the components in the reclaimed asphalt and to know to what extent the coarse foreign matter is present that can influence the properties of the bituminous mixture.
Note: This method does not completely categorize the foreign matter that can occur in reclaimed asphalt.
WARNING: The methods described in this document require the use of solvents that are hazardous to health and are subject to occupational exposure limits as described in relevant legislation and regulations. Exposure levels are related to both handling procedures and ventilation provision and it is emphasized that adequate training is expected to be given to staff employed in the usage of these substances.
Who is BS EN 12697‑42 for?
BS EN 12697‑42 on determination of foreign matter in reclaimed asphalt is largely useful for the construction domain. Specific users include but are not limited to:
- Manufacturers and suppliers of bituminous mixtures and asphalt
- Asphalt refining plants
- Suppliers of construction materials
- Construction and civil engineers
- Contractors
- Road maintenance authorities
Why should you use BS EN 12697‑42?
Bitumen when used as a binder in asphalt, is widely used in the construction domain for road construction, paving and roofing. It strongly binds other pavement components together and provides a smooth and levelled surface.
BS EN 12697‑42 provides a test method to determine the amount and components of coarse foreign matter in reclaimed asphalt. The test results therefore help you assess asphalt concrete durability and overall cohesive strength. BS EN 12697-42 hence ensures that large quantities of coarse foreign matter in asphalt are sieved out, eliminating damage in the form of cracks or any other distress from repeated loading.
These provisions given in BS EN 12697-42 help you to ensure quality and performance by reducing the cost of material production by eliminating quarrying, crushing, and screening operations. For repaving projects, it reduces handling and transportation costs since the refined reclaimed asphalt is retained onsite for reuse.
What’s changed since the last update?
BS EN 12697‑42:2021 supersedes BS EN 12697‑42:2012, which is withdrawn. BS EN 12697‑42:2021 has only been editorially revised.
