What is BS EN 13108-3 - Specification of soft asphalt about?

BS EN 13108-3 discusses bituminous mixtures. BS EN 13108-3 is the third part of the BS EN 13108 series of standards that specifies requirements for mixtures of the mixed group soft asphalt for use on low volume roads and roads with low stability. Soft Asphalt is used for surface courses, regulating courses and bases in colder climates.

BS EN 13108-3 includes requirements for the selection of the constituent materials.

Note1: The mixtures of the mix group soft asphalt are produced on the basis of hot bitumen. Mixtures utilizing bitumen emulsion and bituminous materials based on in situ recycling are not covered by BS EN 13108-3

Note2: BS EN 13108-3 is designed to be read in conjunction with EN 13108-20 and EN 13108-21.

Who is BS EN 13108-3 - Specification of soft asphalt for?

BS EN 13108-3 on the specification of soft asphalt is useful for:

  • Manufacturers and suppliers of bituminous mixtures
  • Construction industry
  • Civil engineers and contractors
  • Road, pavement, and highway construction companies
  • Repair and maintenance companies
  • Local authorities
  • Testing laboratories

Why should you use BS EN 13108-3 - Specification of soft asphalt

Soft asphalt consists of aggregates, aggregates filler, and soft (low viscosity) bituminous binder. Soft asphalt is a practical rehabilitation technology for gravel roads due to its property—self-healing. Under high temperature bitumen becomes significantly softer and cracks heal in soft asphalt wearing layer. It results in less pavement susceptibility to frost heaves and fatigue damage. The aim of BS EN 13108-3 is to enable the specification of soft asphalt mixtures on a performance basis. BS EN 13108-3 helps you in the production of soft asphalt with the right composition proportion and properties which ensure quality and reliable product.

What is changed since the last update?

BS EN 13108-3:2016 supersedes BS EN 13108-3:2006 which is withdrawn.

BS EN 13108-3:2016 includes some technical changes with respect to BS EN 13108-3:2006

These include:

  • Possibility to define specific conditions in documents related to the application of the product
  • CPR reference and new Annex ZA according CPR rules
