What is BS EN 13108-2 - Asphalt Concrete for Very Thin Layers (BBTM) about?

BS EN 13108-2 specifies requirements for mixtures of the mixed group Asphalt Concrete for Very Thin Layers for use on roads, airfields, and other trafficked areas. Asphalt Concrete for Very Thin Layers is a bituminous material, of which the composition and the grading of the aggregate are selected for application of the material in very thin layers with a thickness of 20 mm to 30 mm.

Asphalt Concrete for Very Thin Layers is used for surface courses.

BS EN 13108-2 includes requirements for the selection of the constituent materials.

Note1: Mixtures utilizing bitumen emulsion and bituminous materials based on in situ recycling are not covered by BS EN 13108-2

Note2: BS EN 13108-2 is designed to be read in conjunction with EN 13108-20 and EN 13108-21.

Who is BS EN 13108-2 - Asphalt Concrete for Very Thin Layers (BBTM) for?

BS EN 13108-2 on asphalt concrete for very thin Layers (BBTM) is useful for:

  • Manufacturers and suppliers of bituminous mixtures
  • Construction industry
  • Civil engineers and contractors
  • Road, pavement, and highway construction companies
  • Repair and maintenance companies
  • Local authorities
  • Testing laboratories

Why should you use BS EN 13108-2 - Asphalt Concrete for Very Thin Layers (BBTM)

The aim of BS EN 13108-2 is to enable specification of asphalt concrete for very thin Layers mixtures on a performance basis. BS EN 13108-2 covers a large variety of materials for different applications, traffic, and climate conditions. BS EN 13108-2 also gives properties and listings of possible categories. The menu approach for properties has been chosen so as to accommodate the road industry for all of Europe. BS EN 13108-2 compliant material specifications of asphalt concrete for very thin Layers mixtures can help reduce asphalt viscosity and reduce the time emulsified asphalt takes to set.

What is changed since the last update?

BS EN 13108-2:2016 supersedes BS EN 13108-2:2006 which is withdrawn.

BS EN 13108-2:2016 includes some technical changes with respect to BS EN 13108-2:2006

These include:

  • General, empirical, and fundamental approaches are not used separately anymore, and the properties have been merged into one list with different properties
  • New properties introduced (low temperature properties, friction after polishing)
  • Additional optional sieves for the characterization of the grading
  • For several properties additional categories are introduced
  • Possibility to define specific conditions in documents related to the application of the product
  • CPR reference and new Annex ZA according to CPR rules
