What is BS EN 130742 – Stabilization of binder after recovery by evaporation about?  

BS EN 13074 is a series of the European standard on bitumen and bituminous binders that focusses on the recovery property of binders which plays an important role in the performance and service life of building structures. 

BS EN 130742 is the second part of the BS EN 13074 series of standard documents that specify a method for the stabilisation at 85 °C for 24 h of a binder after recovery from a bituminous emulsion or from a cut-back or fluxed bitumen for further testing. 

Note: BS EN 130742 applies to all types of bituminous emulsions, modified with polymers or non-modified, and as well as to all types of cut-back and fluxed bitumen, both modified with polymers and non-modified.

BS EN 130742 gives the heating and homogenising conditions of the stabilised binder in the preparation of testing method for stabilisation of binder. 

Moreover, BS EN 13074-2 guides you in the extraction of binder in combination with a recovery and stabilization method that is commonly used to evaluate the properties of a binder embedded in an existing building structure.

What’s changed since the last update? 

BS EN 130742:2019 supersedes BS EN 13074-2:2011. BS EN 13074-2:2019 includes some technical changes with respect to BS EN 13074-2:2011. These include: 

  • More precise requirements for the ventilated oven and the metallic plates, as well as for the placing of the plates within the oven 
  • Description of additional equipment (spatula, oven, beaker) to be used for the removal and reheating of the stabilised binder 
  • Shorter storage period of the stabilised binder samples before further testing  
  • More precise instructions (reheating temperatures and maximum reheating time) for the preparation of the stabilised binder sample prior to further testing.
