What is BS EN 13589 - Tensile properties of modified bitumen about?

BS EN 13589 is a European standard on bitumen and bituminous binder that discusses tensile properties of bitumen.

BS EN 13589 specifies a method for determining the tensile properties of an unaged, aged, residual or recovered bituminous binder, in particular, those of polymer-modified bitumens by means of a force ductility test.

The work done during the force ductility test is a criterion for assessing the quality of these materials.

Who is BS EN 13589 - Tensile properties of modified bitumen for?

BS EN 13589 on bituminous binder is useful for:

  • Builders
  • Civil engineers
  • Manufacturers of bituminous materials
  • Manufacturers and suppliers of ductilometer

Why should you use BS EN 13589 - Tensile properties of modified bitumen

The bituminous binder is a material used to hold solid particles together, for example, bitumen or tar that is most widely used construction material.

BS EN 13589 provides the apparatus requirements to test the tensile properties of the bituminous binder.

BS EN 13589 guides you through a ductilometer consisting of a traction device and a water bath capable of maintaining a constant speed.

Preparation and conservation of samples for testing modified bitumen is described in BS EN 13589, for evaluating the cohesion behaviour in bituminous binders.

Overall, BS EN 13589 assist you in manufacturing a well-tested bituminous binder. BS EN 13589 enables you to determine the tensile properties of the binders that remains elastic at a lower temperature, enhancing workability during cold weather months. In this way, you can utilise a bituminous binder for your building ensuring high-water resistance, adhesion strength, and weatherproof qualities.

What’s changed since the last update?

BS EN 13589:2018 supersedes BS EN 13589:2008. BS EN 13589:2018 includes some technical changes with respect to BS EN 13589:2008. These include:

  • Updated normative references
  • Additional terms and definitions
  • Deleting determination of deformation energy by EN 13703
  • Introduction of calculation methods of deformation energy in the standard
  • Renaming “conventional energy” by “cohesion energy”.
