What is PD CEN/TS 17481 about?

PD CEN/TS 17481 describes a method for determination of the salt content in bitumen, conventionally expressed in mg of sodium chloride (noted NaCl as from this point of this document) per kg of bitumen. This method is valid for “equivalent NaCl contents” between 20 mg/kg and 500 mg/kg.

Who is PD CEN/TS 17481 for?

PD CEN/TS 17481 on salt content in bitumen is useful for:

  • Manufacturer of bitumen and binders

Why should you use PD CEN/TS 17481?

The electrical conductivity test method is necessary for measuring the conductivity of a bitumen solution in a mixture of solvents in which are immersed two parallel stainless-steel plates constituting electrodes subjected to an alternating current.

PD CEN/TS 17481 provides general requirements on the products and reagents used for the analysis of salt content in bitumen.

The laboratory apparatus and glassware for presenting conductivity measurements are covered by PD CEN/TS 17481

PD CEN/TS 17481 also covers the preparation of the hydro-alcoholic combination, as well as the calibration of the conductivity metre and "blank" measurement.

Furthermore, utilising the electrical conductivity method to determine salt content in bitumen, this test method allows you to improve the strength and characteristics of bitumen used for construction purposes.
