What is BS EN 1426 - Needle penetration of bitumen and bituminous binders about ?

BS EN 1426 is the European standard on bitumen and bituminous binders that has a highly adhesive nature, which keeps the materials bound together under strong bonds.

BS EN 1426 specifies a method for determining the consistency of bitumen and bituminous binders.

Normal procedure is described for penetrations up to (330 × 0,1) mm, but for penetrations above this value, up to (500 × 0,1) mm, different operating parameters are necessary.

Who is BS EN 1426 - Needle penetration of bitumen and bituminous binders for ?

BS EN 1426 on bitumen and bituminous binders is useful for:

  • Civil engineers
  • Manufacturers of bituminous products
  • Manufacturers of petroleum products
  • Designers and manufacturers of penetrometer devices

Why should you use BS EN 1426 - Needle penetration of bitumen and bituminous binders

Penetration of a standard needle is the consistency, expressed as the distance in tenths of a millimetre that a standard needle will penetrate vertically into a sample of the material under specified conditions of temperature, load and loading duration.

BS EN 1426 provides the laboratory apparatus to determine the needle penetration of bitumen and bituminous binders.

The test sampling, procedure and test preparation of the needle holder and needles are set out in BS EN 1426 to the determination of the penetration.

The maximum range of the valid determinations of the penetration is outlined in BS EN 1426.

Expression of results of the penetration value, precision data and test report are all detailed in BS EN 1426.

Furthermore, BS EN 1426 walks you through the process of producing bitumen and bituminous binders by performing the bitumen penetration test, which measures the hardness or softness of bitumen by measuring the depth of penetration of a standard loaded needle in five seconds while keeping the bitumen sample temperature at 25 °C.

As a result, penetration testing determines the consistency and stability of pure bitumen and oxidised bitumen based on adhesion and hardness to achieve optimum building performance.

What’s changed since the last update?

BS EN 1426:2015 supersedes BS EN 1426:2007. BS EN 1426:2015 includes some technical changes with respect to BS EN 1426:2007. These include:

  • The normative reference to mercury thermometers has been deleted
  • The description of 6.4 has been clarified and improved.
